Big Texas Award: Alex Boyda

What do you get when you mix a pinch of cinnamon, some broken bones, a little voodoo, along with some guts and determination? You get a Big Texas Award that's what you get!

As Apparel Press Assistant Alex Boyda walked into work, he could sense something wasn't right. The job he and his pressman were supposed to run was an 11 color print on black t-shirts, for none other than Voodoo Willy, of Voodoo Willy's Smoke Hut. But strange things seem to happen when you mix voodoo and printing. That's when Alex's fears were confirmed, and he realized that the scheduled pressman had come to work with a broken hand, an injury sustained the night before, rendering him useless as a main press operator.

Hoping to break the apparent spell cast by Voodoo Willy, Alex made a Big Texas sized decision. Without hesitation he took it upon himself to run the shirts. Not only did he do a great job printing a difficult 11 color shirt, he did it with a great attitude to boot! Apparently Voodoo Willy was pleased as well, for the gods have smiled on Alex with a Big Texas Cinnamon Roll.

A delicious, frosted, individually wrapped Big Texas Cinnamon Roll: the snack food of printing champions.

Apparel Printing Production Manager Jeff Weisenberg congratulates Alex with a handful of sugary sweetness, as well as a Big Texas Cinnamon Roll.

Voodoo Willy's Smoke Hut shirts: the catalyst for Boyda's award winning day. Congratulations again Alex!

Jakprints Halloween 2009

For some reason at the end of every October, it seems like all of our regular employees call off and send strange replacements to do their job. Don't get me wrong, they're a great help. It just becomes an HR nightmare because half of them present both birth AND death certificates, let alone the all the red tape in getting them on our health care plan. Regardless, here are some pictures of our new employees at work.

Abe Lincoln putting in an honest days work.

Garden gnome handles a customer file prep question.

Grim Reaper spent the day lurking by the water cooler waiting to talk about the reality show "Survivor". Don't even get him started about "Deal or No Deal", huge Howie Mandel fan.

H1N1 prepares some squeegees.

Afrohead tries to convince Bill to order him a custom XXXXXL beanie.

The Newsies are always a chipper duo-

But chipper in that way where you kinda find it entertaining when they get attacked by a zombie on lunch break.

Overall, the Halloween temps did an outstanding job. Unfortunately, we learned a little too late that it's a good idea to give the zombies their own office. Sorry Newsies!

Made In The 216 Holiday Shoppe

Just finished printing postcards for a great Cleveland event called Made In The 216. It's a shopping celebration created by Room Service owner, Danielle DeBoe. It's purpose is to highlight the many talented designers who are choosing to stay and build their businesses in Cleveland, Ohio.

In addition to their normal location, they will transform an empty Cleveland storefront into a festive Holiday Shoppe.

The Holiday Shoppe, which will be open daily from 5-9pm (November 6-29) will be kicked off on Friday, November 6 with a party featuring beer, specialty hot chocolate and cider created by Ryan Santos, with music provided by DJ Doc. The party and shopping will be open until 10pm with an after party featuring Cleveland bands, The Buried Wires and Filmstrip to be held directly after at The Happy Dog.

For more info visit the Room Service website or their Made In The 216 event on facebook!

Jakprints Hearts Guts!

Have you ever wondered what function your pancreas performs? Yeah, maybe? Okay, I'll give you that one. But I bet you never thought your pancreas could be cute and cuddly huh? Well, you know who did? I Heart Guts did, that's who!

Illustrations of internal organs are notoriously gross and slimy looking, let alone an actual photograph of them. I Heart Guts takes a fresh approach to human anatomy, creating a variety of cute, albeit rather disturbing characters. (Disturbing in the most heart warming sense!) Some would argue that these are misleading and not medically accurate. I say, if I ever need a transplant, my first stop is going to be IHeartGuts.com for one of their plush organs!

We just printed these fun, colorful 18x24 posters for I Heart Guts. Be on the lookout, I'm sure they will be available for purchase on their website soon!

Preparing For Fun Fun Fun Fest 2009

Lately we've been busy printing for the good folks at Fun Fun Fun Fest. If you haven't heard, it's a festival in Austin, Texas created by people in the music scene, who are driven by the DIY attitude and work ethic found in the music they love. This year's festival will be held November 7-8, and will host another collection of amazing bands including The Sword, The Pharcyde, Of Montreal, Lucero, Face to Face and (85) more!

We're sending Jakprinters Josh and Angie down to man the Jakprints booth, as well as hand out free Fun Fun Fun stickers (as seen below). We're also going to have some giveaway contests, so be sure to stop by.

The festival stickers we will be handing out are custom die-cut shaped and printed in full color. They are printed from our EcoGreen sticker product line, which means they are more environmentally friendly than traditional vinyl stickers.

The Fun Fest shirts are printed on Tultex #0202 tees, with a simple one color front and 4-color on the back.

The festival fliers and posters are printed in full color on 100# gloss text with standard Jakprints soy and vegetable based ink.

It's been great working with Fun Fun Fun Fest, and we're looking forward to heading down this November. Hope to see you there!

PureButtons Haunted Nightfall Install

It was a brisk October evening, with nightfall fast approaching. Our friends at PureButtons LLC were busy wrapping up their move to a brand new location, and needed our help. Jakprints' own Dan Byler headed by to install four window-perf decals we had just printed, the final touch to their professional and enticing new store front.

But at this time of year there are all types of ghoulish creatures out after dusk. So when Dan made the evening trek out to PureButtons for the install, he knew he had to work fast.

Checking through his supplies, he made sure he didn't forget anything:
Decals... check
Window cleaner... check
Squeegee... check
Holy water... check
Garlic... check
Silver bullets... check
He was ready to begin.

Dan began by lining up the first decal. He knew that the install must happen quickly so as to avoid any unnatural "incidents". He also knew that Jeff, the owner of PureButtons, has an eye for detail so there was a fine line to walk.

Dan squeegeed the decal in a calm and calculated manner, "One down... three to go," he quietly whispered, attempting to calm his nerves.

With daylight fading, Dan began prepping the third window. (Wait... what was that?) "It's just the wind, just the wind," he reassured himself. There was not much time left...

Shrouded by darkness, the install continued. "Just one more to go," Dan kept thinking. Beads of sweat were overtaken by the cold chill of night. A consummate professional, Dan set aside his own fear for the betterment of the customer. He completed the final decal, and gathered his tools. As he headed out, he couldn't shake that feeling that he was being watched, but Dan was glad to get the job done properly, and make it out in one piece.

Here we have the finished windows in daylight. Thanks to Jeff at PureButtons for a great project and to our own Dan Byler for his brave October night install!

Michael Jackson Goes Economic With Tultex

At Jakprints, we have had a lot of customers asking for affordable brands, comparable to American Apparel. Recently, while on a stroll through Target, I came across their section of obligatory Michael Jackson merchandise. Driven by morbid curiosity and my duty as an industry professional, I felt compelled to do some research. They had several fairly simple apparel designs, screen printed in 3 to 4 colors at most. The shirts were printed on Tultex #0202, a brand we offer as an economic, cost effective option. It's a quality shirt and a nice alternative to the more expensive American Apparel #2001. I say if Tultex is good enough for the "King of Pop", it's worth looking into as an option!

The Jakprints Mustache-Off

The Jakprints apparel press floor has always been a happy-go-lucky, friendly place to work. But over the past few weeks, one can sense an undercurrent of tension. The source of that tension is a newly developed mustache rivalry between apparel pressmen Mattew "Mate" Galati and Andrew "Murph" Murphy.

There have been accounts of them standing 20 paces apart leering at each other, like a scene from The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. As if believing the longer and harder they stared, the more their respective mustaches would grow.

Both men, each in their mid-twenties, haven't had the greatest luck with facial follicles. Co-workers have described their mustaches as "sad", "adolescent", and "patchy at best". Despite the disparagement, they are determined to continue their battle to the bitter end.

We decided to go public and help solve this heated debate. Who currently wins your vote: Mate or Murph?
